Selenite Throne
22” x 30”
Silkscreen print, rubylith stencil
Edition of (6), white ink on black paper
Provenance and Sources
Edition of (6) screen prints, white ink on black paper, printed in 1972. An additional set of black ink on white paper was also printed at that time.
The title is from the H. G. Wells 1901 science fiction novel The First Men in the Moon, which the artist first read as a Classics Illustrated comic book and later read the full original novel. Selenites were denizens of the moon with their own civilization.
The discs in the design were probably inspired by the image of the Fasting Buddha of Gandhara excavated in Sikri, Pakistan, and dating from the 2nd century CE. The artist was familiar with this image at the time the design was created.
